Macbeth at Smock Alley Theatre Dublin

There’s something about seeing Shakespeare in Smock Alley that just works. The building dates back to the 1660s and it’s one of Dublin’s oldest theatre sites. Now Volta Theatre Company are staging Macbeth here, and the combination of venue and material is perfect.

What to Expect

This Macbeth explores murder, totalitarianism, and how a person loses their soul. It’s Shakespeare’s most intense play, following a man who starts as a war hero and ends as a tyrant, undone by ambition and guilt. Volta Theatre Company are known for visceral, physical productions, and Smock Alley’s Main Space puts you right in the middle of the action.

The run goes from March 23 to April 2, giving you nearly two weeks to catch it. If you’ve seen Macbeth before in a larger venue, seeing it in a space this intimate changes everything. The dagger scene, the sleepwalking scene, Lady Macbeth’s descent - they all hit differently when the actors are feet away from you.

This is proper theatre - ambitious, dark, and uncompromising. Exactly what Smock Alley does best.
