About This Tour

Hear Irelands story through Irish songs while walking through Galway city streets.

We will visit Galway port from where so many desperate Galway and Connemara people were forced to leave and hear songs highlighting this story. Then we will visit Spanish Arch, the wonderful Claddagh fishing community, Eglinton Canal, Carrolls, The Dew Drop, Lynch Castle, St Nicholas Church and taste the terrible reality of Oliver Cromwell. Visit old Market location of WoodQuay, see the Corrib river and 1890s railway bridge. Visit Eyre Square and hear about Dargan, Irelands railway hero. Hear about the cattle horse and hay markets here. Also listen to song telling of the Irish working building American Railways.

Itinerary

  1. Starting in Galway Port, then Spanish Arch, Eglinton Canal, the Claddagh, Dominick St Lower, Dew Drop Inn, Claddagh Museum, Lynch Castle, Cromwell attacked Nicholas Church, Lynch Wall, Woodquay, Corrib Riveer waterside, Eyre Square. (10 min)
  2. Spanish Arch was the location of the market where claddagh women sold the days catch. Hear Irish language fishing song. Hear about the claddagh fishermen and galway hooker working boats and the sumptuous norman lifestyle. (10 min)
  3. Visit the last remaining claddagh cottage and hear Bing Crosby song, Galway Bay featuring Claddagh (10 min)
  4. Carrolls pub, one of many 19th century buildings using Galway limestone. (10 min)
  5. Hear about 18th century Galway whiskey Persse and local brewing history. Hear local drinking ballad. (10 min)
  6. Hear more Medieval history with song featuring non Norman native Irish chiefs. (10 min)
  7. Hear of Columbus and Cromwell, and more importantly life of native Irish during these times. Hear Irish language song about the loss of native Irish woodland during the 14th-17th centurioes. (10 min)
  8. 19th century location of market sellers hawking potatoes, eggs, fish. Hear song 30 foot trailor bemoaning the loss of old traditions and irish customary ways. (10 min)
