Dublin looks different from the water. Streets you have walked a dozen times suddenly make more sense when you can see how the river connects them, and buildings you barely noticed from the quays reveal their full scale when viewed from below. This 45-minute cruise on the River Liffey is short, affordable, and surprisingly informative for the price.
The boat takes you through the centre of the city, passing under bridges that span centuries of engineering and design. The Ha’penny Bridge, the ornate ironwork of which has been a Dublin landmark since 1816, is one of the highlights. So is the sweeping harp-shaped Samuel Beckett Bridge and Gandon’s masterpiece, the Custom House, which looks far more impressive from the river than from the road. The live commentary traces Dublin’s relationship with the Liffey from the Viking settlement over a thousand years ago, through the Georgian building boom, the industrial decline, and the modern redevelopment of the docklands.
The vessel carries up to 48 passengers and is fully covered, so the cruise runs in all weather. There is outdoor deck space for when the sun cooperates. The boat runs on HVO fuel, which significantly reduces emissions compared to standard diesel. At EUR21 per person, this is one of the best-value activities in Dublin and fits easily into a gap between other plans.
