- The tour starts next to the James Joyce Statue at the Dublin Portal. You’ll hear the story of James Joyce, his stories and history. You’ll then be guided step by step through Dublin discovering it’s history. (5 min)
- The statue is a tribute to his crucial role in the nineteen thirteen Dublin Lockout, where he fought for the rights of unskilled workers to join unions. (5 min)
- He was an Irish physician, journalist, and politician who made a huge difference in Dublin’s history. The statue was erected in eighteen seventy-nine, just a few years after his passing. (5 min)
- His efforts of fighting for Ireland’s Catholic majority led to the Catholic Emancipation Act of eighteen twenty-nine, a major win for religious freedom. (5 min)
- The Palace Bar, a Victorian pub, has been a Dublin gem since eighteen twenty-three. Over the years, it has become a beloved spot for writers, journalists, and intellectuals. In the nineteen forties and fifties, it was the go-to place for staff from the Irish Times, including its editor, R.M. Smyllie. (5 min)
