Whelan's has been the heartbeat of Dublin's live music scene since 1989. Located on Wexford Street just off Camden Street, this venue has seen early shows from Hozier, Arctic Monkeys, Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave and hundreds more before they hit the big time.
The main room is an intimate 400-capacity space with superb acoustics and a stage close enough to the crowd that you can see the sweat. Upstairs, a smaller room hosts emerging acts, comedy nights and DJ sets. The front bar is a proper Dublin pub in its own right, with a long counter, decent pints and a smoking area that doubles as Dublin's best spot for bumping into musicians.
The late bar runs until 2am most weekends, and the beer garden out back is one of the best in the city for a post-gig debrief. Whelan's is not just a venue - it is the venue. If there is a gig on while you are in Dublin, go.
