Abbey Theatre
One hundred and ten years after its premiere, Lennox Robinson’s The Whiteheaded Boy returns to the Abbey Theatre in a brash new production directed by Annie Ryan. It’s a coming-of-age comedy about the pressure of family expectations, and if you’ve ever been the favourite child (or resented the one who was), this one’s for you.
What to Expect
Robinson’s play tells the story of a young man whose family has sacrificed everything for his education and career - and what happens when he spectacularly fails to live up to their investment. Ryan’s production reimagines the play for the late 20th century, keeping the wit and the social commentary while giving it a contemporary edge.
It’s a play about Irish family dynamics - the guilt, the expectation, the quiet resentment, and the love underneath all of it. The Abbey is the right place for it, and a seven-week run from June 3 to July 18 means plenty of time to see it.
