Malahide Castle is one of the oldest castles in Ireland, dating back to the 12th century. Set in 260 acres of stunning parkland in the seaside town of Malahide, it’s one of Dublin’s best day trips - and the grounds are free to explore.
What to Expect
The castle itself is a guided tour (about 45 minutes) through medieval and Georgian rooms filled with period furniture, portraits, and 800 years of history. The Talbot Botanic Gardens are a hidden gem with rare and exotic plants from the southern hemisphere. The walled garden is gorgeous.
The grounds are perfect for families - there’s a massive playground (the Fairy Trail playground), woodland walks, and open parkland. The Avoca cafe does excellent food. Malahide village itself is charming with great restaurants and the seafront.
Good to Know
- Grounds and parkland: free, open daily
