What to Expect
God Is an Astronaut are from Kilcoole in Wicklow, and they are one of the most significant bands Ireland has ever produced in the post-rock genre. They’ve been at it since 2002, and their records — largely instrumental, built on cycling guitar patterns, swelling synthesisers, and drums that hit like weather — have developed a genuinely global audience over two decades.
Live, they are something else entirely. The absence of vocals forces the music to do all the emotional work, and when a God Is an Astronaut set builds to one of its peaks, the effect is overwhelming in the best possible way. They control dynamics better than almost anyone in their genre — the quiet passages matter as much as the loud ones, and both have room to breathe.
The Academy on Middle Abbey Street is a medium-capacity venue that suits this kind of show well. The sound system handles heavy, layered music with clarity, and the standing format means the crowd tends to be fully engaged. For anyone who has never seen them live, this is a strong recommendation. For longtime fans, it requires no justification at all.
Good to Know
- Doors typically at 7pm with support acts on before the main set
- Standing venue; arrive early for a good position near the stage
- Fully licensed bar throughout the night
- Earplugs recommended — not because the sound is bad, but because it can get genuinely loud at peaks
- Tickets do sell out; book in advance
Getting There
