Dan Nicholas is a New York guitarist making his Dublin debut at Arthur’s. The New York jazz scene is its own particular ecosystem: competitive, demanding, and producing players who’ve been through a musical education that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. A debut at a venue like Arthur’s, on Thomas Street in the Liberties, is the right kind of introduction to the city.
The quartet format suits a debut: it gives the leader enough space to demonstrate their voice while keeping the arrangement tight enough that a new audience can follow where it’s going.
What to expect
9pm Saturday in the Liberties. This is a debut, which means there’s a particular energy to the night: the musicians want to make a good first impression, and Dublin jazz audiences tend to be receptive to that kind of occasion.
Arthur’s is an intimate venue. The proximity between the musicians and the audience is part of what makes a first Dublin show at this venue feel different from a larger-scale debut.
Getting there
Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Club is at 28 Thomas Street, Dublin 8. Bus routes 51B, 123, and 77A serve Thomas Street. Book through Eventbrite; capacity is limited.
