Dalkey Book Festival

Dalkey Book Festival event

The Dalkey Book Festival has grown into one of Ireland’s most important literary events. Set in the beautiful coastal village of Dalkey, just south of Dublin, it attracts major international authors alongside the best of Irish writing.

What to Expect

The festival runs across multiple venues in Dalkey village, from the Town Hall to local churches and pubs. Events include author talks, panel discussions, readings, workshops, and interviews. Past guests have included Salman Rushdie, Anne Enright, Sebastian Barry, and David Sedaris. The programme balances literary fiction with popular non-fiction, poetry, and children’s events.

The setting is half the appeal. Dalkey is one of the most picturesque villages on the Dublin coast, and events spill out into cafes, pubs, and the castle grounds.

Good to Know

  • Individual event tickets available - no need for a full festival pass
  • Some free events on the outdoor stages
  • The village has excellent restaurants and pubs for between events
  • Combine with a walk to Dalkey Island or Killiney Hill

Getting There

Dalkey is on the DART line, about 30 minutes from Dublin city centre. Dalkey DART station is right in the village. Dublin Bus route 59 also serves Dalkey from Dun Laoghaire.
