Blues dancing is a family of partner dances rooted in African American musical traditions, danced to blues, jazz, and soul music. It’s an improvised, connection-based style - less about set choreography than about listening to your partner and the music at the same time. It’s been growing steadily in Ireland over the last decade, and weekend workshops with visiting instructors are how most serious dancers build their vocabulary.
Kasia and Mateusz are experienced blues dance instructors who run workshops across Europe. This weekend session at Liffey Trust Studios runs across Saturday and Sunday, giving participants enough time to actually absorb material rather than just sample it.
What to Expect
A weekend workshop format typically runs across multiple sessions - foundation technique, connection exercises, musicality work, and social dancing time where you put it into practice. Kasia and Mateusz’s teaching approach emphasises lead-follow connection over step patterns, which is the right approach for blues.
Liffey Trust Studios on Sheriff Street Upper is a well-equipped dance venue in the Docklands area. The space is purpose-built for workshops, which means proper floor, mirrors, and room to work without feeling cramped.
You don’t need a partner to attend - most workshop formats pair people up and rotate partners through the sessions.
