Anders Bergcrantz is a Swedish jazz trumpeter with a long career in Scandinavian and international jazz. His programme for this evening is “Miles Davis: A Century in Sound,” a quartet set drawing on the breadth of Davis’s work across different eras and styles. It’s a significant undertaking: Miles Davis’s recorded output spans from bebop to fusion to ambient, and navigating it coherently in a live setting requires a particular kind of musical intelligence.
Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Club on Thomas Street is a good venue for this kind of event. It’s intimate, the sound is good, and the Liberties setting has its own historical resonance for jazz in Dublin.
What to expect
5:30pm on a Saturday evening, which is an unusually civilised hour for a jazz concert. You can come straight from the afternoon, stay for a drink before the set begins, and still be done at a reasonable hour. The quartet format means you’ll hear Bergcrantz in dialogue with three other musicians, which is where the programme’s scope becomes most interesting.
This is a serious jazz concert, not background music. It rewards attention.
Getting there
Arthur’s is at 28 Thomas Street in the Liberties. Bus routes 51B, 123, and 77A serve Thomas Street. Luas Red Line (Fatima stop) is about 10 minutes on foot. Tickets on Eventbrite.
